Somalia: ‘50 Al Shabaab killed’: Kenya military 7 Jan 7, 2012 - 1:43:56 PM
MOGADISHU, Somalia Jan 7, 2012 (Garowe Online) - The Kenyan military says more than 50 members of Somali Islamist group, Al Shabaab, were killed in a Friday air-strike in southern Somalia, Radio Garowe reports.
Army spokesman Emmanuel Chirchir told reporters that the Al Shabaab militants were targeted while organizing themselves in the outskirts of Garbaharey, the provincial capital of Gedo region, which borders Kenya.
Mr. Chirchir said the militants sustained a massive loss during the air strike. Kenyan air force jets have pounded the positions of Somali militants in the southern regions since Kenyan troops intervened militarily in southern Somalia in Oct. 2011.
Separately, Al Shabaab officer who refused to share his name told Mogadishu radio stations that 10 Kenyan soldiers were killed along a road, as the soldiers were heading to El Adde village in Gedo region.
Kenyan forces have made a slow paced entry into Somalia since deploying an estimated 3,000 soldiers in Gedo and Lower Jubba regions, of southern Somalia.
