MOGADISHU, Somalia Apr 8 (Garowe Online) -
Hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets in Somalia's capital Tuesday to protest against hyperinflation and the rising price of goods.
The protestors threw stones at businesses in Mogadishu's Kaaraan district and blamed businesspeople for the economic troubles in the capital.
The main market in Kaaraan was attacked by angry protestors, who wounded at least six businesspeople standing at the front entrance of their shops, traders said.
Armed guards protecting Kaaraan District Commissioner Abdullahi Mohamed Roble opened gunfire on the protestors in one case, according to witnesses.
No one was reportedly wounded in the incident.
However, Mr. Roble completely denied reports that his armed guards opened fire on the crowd while speaking to local media,
He stated that he supports the protests against hyperinflation, which has affected the local economy and led to high prices for common goods.
An official speaking for the Banadir Regional Business Council said hyperinflation is being experienced around the world, and not limited to Somalia.
Similar protests have rocked other towns in the Horn of Africa nation, including the northern port of Bossaso.
Tuesday's protests in Mogadishu coincides with emerging reports saying that a ship is docked at the southern port of Kismayo, 500km south of the capital.
According to the reports, the ship is loaded with counterfeit Somali Shillings and local administrators were meeting in Kismayo over the sensitive issue.
