Swedish university to start Somali language course

Gothenburg University introduce to start a course of study in the Somali language next fall.

The program will be the first of its kind in the country.

Students who enroll in the part-time, evening programme will learn the fundamentals of the Somali language as well as knowledge of Somali society and culture.

According to a statement from the university, Somali is spoken by more than 20 million people worldwide. Due to Somalia’s long-running civil war, millions of Somalis now live outside the country.

There are nearly 3,000 Somali speakers in Gothenburg and about 20,000 in Sweden.
