Somalia: President Farole Visits Coastal Areas Again, Nearly 16,000-Heads of Livestock Distributed to Storm Victims

The President of Puntland State of Somalia H.E. Abdirahman Mohamed Mohamud (Farole) conducted a second visit to coastal areas of Nugal Region in Puntland on December 13, to survey local conditions and to engage communities affected by the tropical cyclone that hit parts of Puntland's eastern coast Nov. 9-13, 2013.

Puntland Security Minister H.E. Khalif Issa Mudan, Health Minister H.E. Ali Abdullahi Warsame, Deputy Interior Minister H.E. Ali Yusuf Hosh, and Deputy Livestock Minister H.E. Abdiweli Hersi Nur, along with presidential staff accompanied President Farole on the roadtrip visit to villages in Eyl District. The large delegation also included a number of Titled Elders and Islamic scholars of Puntland, who have been working jointly with the Government in the Puntland Disaster Management and Rescue Committee to organize relief efforts and long-term support to storm victims.

Since the initial emergency relief effort was concluded, the Committee has been working on Phase Two to re-stock livestock heads to storm victims, as a long-term recovery option for the livelihoods of pastoralist communities. Some 15,887 heads of livestock was distributed to hundreds of pastoralist families affected by the storms.

Puntland Government shares its congratulations and appreciations with public institutions, security forces, traditional elders and Islamic scholars, local and Diaspora communities, for responding proactively and working together in solidarity during this humanitarian and economic emergency to provide urgent assistance and find long-term recovery solutions to coastal communities affected by the storms.
