Al-Shabaab loots WFP office in Southern Somalia

Fighters loyal to Somalia’s Al-Shabaab insurgent group have reportedly looted the United Nations Food Program WFP headquarters in the southern Somali town of Bu'aale

According to eyewitnesses, Al-Shabaab fighters overwhelmed and disarmed the WFP contracted guards in the headquarters compound, looting equipment and money before closing down the office and asked the staffers to vacate.

“Al-Shabaab fighters have occupied the WFP office. The office is empty, everything have been looted and the workers sending packing,” said a WFP staff who requested anonymity.

“We are hearing the fighters took $50,000 from the office. Talks are on-going to settle the dispute and make sure the looted equipments and money is returned,” said an elder in the town.

The office closure comes as a month ultimatum given by Al-Shabaab for WFP to empty all its warehouses in the Al-Shabaab-controlled areas expires.

On other hand, Al-Shabaab administrators in the port town of Merka, 90 km south of Somali capital Mogadishu have burnt foodstuffs emptied from WFP warehouses in the town.

The group, which wants to impose its own version of Islamic law across the Horn of African nation, has previously banned many international aid agencies from operating in areas under its control.
