Somali Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon received Italy’s Ambassador to Somalia Andrea Mazzella in Mogadishu on Monday, Garowe Online reports.

The two officials held a joint press conference, noting that discussions centered around advancing relations between the Italian government and Somalia’s new federal government.
“Italy has historic relations with Somalia and we thank the Italian government for its assistance to Somalia,” said Prime Minister Shirdon.
Amb. Mazzella noted the political progress achieved in Somalia and congratulated the Somali people and the new federal government.
“Italy is ready to help Somalia, in the areas of security, justice, social services, and human rights,” said Amb. Mazzella.
The Somali federal government was established in Sept. 2012 as the country’s first permanent government since 1991.
