Somalia: PM: ''Somalia is a free country''

NAIROBI, Kenya Feb 4 2012 (Garowe Online) – Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Gaas who held a press conference in the Somali embassy in Nairobi told reporters that Somalia will not return to colonialism after an article that falsely stated that the Italian government suggested that it should, Radio Garowe reports.

Prime Minister Gaas who recently returned from Italy was asked about the article and its validity, he replied, “I met with the Prime Minister and other Italian government officials and they denied any legitimacy to the claims.”

The PM who spoke the BBC on Friday said that the documents that were accredited to the Italian government were drafted by academics not the government.

PM Gaas passionately denied allegations of returning colonialism, he told reporters that “Somalia is a free country, and nobody will allow this country to return to  colonialism.’’

PM Gaas stated that the Somalia conference in London is to raise awareness so the international community and neighbouring countries can jointly help quell the issues that are troubling Somalia after he was asked about the scepticism that some people believe of the proposed Somalia conference in London.

PM Gaas who is in Nairobi recently returned from Italy after he met with Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti and Italy’s Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi.
