Puntland: Deputy Police Commissioner targeted in suicide car bomb attack in Galkayo

A suicide car bomb attack in the administrative capital of Mudug region, Galkayo, occurred Monday morning, targeting the Deputy Police Commissioner General Muhyadin Ahmed Musse’s vehicle near the central police station in Galkayo.

A suicide bomber who packed his vehicle with explosives crashed into the Gen. Muhyadin’s convoy, destroying three vehicles including the bomber’s vehicle which was totaled in the blast.

There are many casualties among the civilians in the area and a number of officers. Three police officers sustained injures in the blast and one casualty being the suicide bomber. Casualties are totaling 27 injured of which 15 were admitted to hospital.  

The terror cells attempted to assassinate Gen. Muhyadin in the terror plot, however were unsuccessful in their heinous act. Gen. Muhyadin only received minor injuries from the blast.

Gen. Muhyadin who has been stationed in Galkayo for many months has been conducting an anti-piracy and counter-terrorism campaign in the region successfully arresting and capturing pirates and Al Shabaab fighters operating in Puntland.  

Currently Puntland security agencies are conducting an investigation of the suicide attack. Further information will be released in upcoming press releases.
