Somalia’s parliament speaker Sheikh Aden Mohammed Nur Madobe has accused the rebel movements of commiting gross human right violation against the innocent civilians in war-torn Somalia.
Speaking to reporters in Mogadishu at the eve of World’s Human Right day, Madobe said the armed groups kill and maim innocent civilians.
“The opposition groups indiscriminately massacre civilians; it’s a serious violation of human rights. The stoning to death of a young girl, accused of adultery in Kismayo is just an example,” he said.
Mogadishu-based Elman Peace and Human Rights Organisation accused both sides of committing human rights violation.
“The government and the opposition must avoid civilian casualties and respect human rights whenever they are fighting in Mogadishu,” said the group’s chairmain
Some Mogadishu elders who support insurgents have also accused the fragile government of human right violation, a blame game that often emerge whenever there are civilian casualties.
The counter accusations come as the world celebrates Human right day and the UN Special Envoy for Somalia Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah has called for redoubling of efforts to restore peace and to put an end to the violence, which has devastated the lives of so many ordinary Somalis, and to the pervasive impunity that is perpetuating the conflict.
“Respecting the life and dignity of others is an obligation for those in positions of authority, but also the responsibility of everyone. I urge all Somalis, whether inside the country or in the Diaspora, to condemn and reject all acts of violence and redouble their efforts to restore stability,” he said.
