Somalia’s parliament speaker Sheikh Adan Madobe rebuffs remarks by some lawmakers who called on his resignation and election of a new speaker.
Sheikh Madobe told reporters that his position is part of Djibouti accord, which paved the way for the formations of a national unity government last year.
“Lawmakers have the right to hold the legislature accountable but they must follow the appropriate way. Yesterday’s statement by some members over the mandate of speaker was unconstitutional,” he said.
Some 50 Somali MPs on Wednesday held meeting in a Mogadishu, calling on the speaker to relinquish his position because his term has expired. Top TFG officials are reportedly behind the meeting.
Prof. Mahammed Omar Dalha, the second deputy speaker termed the decision by the lawmakers as an appropriate action...
The chairperson of parliamentary information committee Amino Omar Jamaa said they are aware of people behind the yesterday’s meeting and is meant to devastate the parliament.
“The remarks by some lawmakers were against the law and they are aware of that, but they have the backing of some people who are opposed to the accountability motion before the parliament,” she said.
The squabbling in the Somali parliament came after some lawmakers refused to attend the parliament sittings due to unpaid salaries.
The non-payment has also led to heated misunderstanding between the speaker and the top government officials including the president and some minister.
