At least 11 people were killed overnight Wednesday in the Somali capital Mogadishu in steet battles between government forces and insurgents, Radio Garowe reports.
The fighting was concentrated in Mogadishu's Bondhere district, as Somali government forces backed by African Union peacekeepers (AMISOM) fought against Al Qaeda-affiliated Al Shabaab insurgents.
Witnesses said all the 10 people killed in the fighting were civilians. But it was unknown the number of casualties on the side of TFG/AMISOM forces and Al Shabaab insurgents.
Separately, two explosions in Wadajir and Dharkinley districts killed at least 1 person and wounded 20 civilians. The target of the explosions of Somali government soldiers, witnesses added.
Mogadishu has been marred by insurgent violence in early 2007, when Al Shabaab rebels vowed to overthrow the UN-backed TFG administration in Mogadishu.
The TFG leadership has been crippled by corruption and infighting, while Somali civilians in Mogadishu have been victimized by the violence and displacement.
