Somalia: 5 soldiers killed in bomb attack on Kismayo police station

KISMAYO, Somalia Oct 27, 2012 (Garowe Online) - At least five Somali soldiers were killed on Saturday after a bomb exploded at a police station in the southern port city of Kismayo, Garowe Online reports.

Witnesses and local sources reported that a big explosion at a police station killed five soldiers and wounded ten others.

Unconfirmed reports said four civilians were wounded in gunfire following the explosion.

Somali forces aided by Kenyan contingent of AMISOM seized Kismayo in Sept. 2012 after expelling Al Shabaab group from the port city. Al Shabaab, which controlled Kismayo and many southern regions since 2008, has vowed to carry out bombings and hit-and-run attacks targeting Somali and AMISOM forces in Kismayo.

A political process to build ‘Jubaland’ state in southern Somalia has been taking place in neighboring Kenya under the auspices of IGAD regional bloc. This week, the leader of Somalia’s Puntland government, Abdirahman Mohamed Farole, voiced strong support for the formation of Jubaland and other states of federal Somalia.
