Chairman of TPEC Mohamed Hassan Barre announced at a press conference on Monday that after evaluations of 9 political associations in Puntland who announced their bid with TPEC, 6 political associations met the requirements.
"We are moving into the next phase of the democratization process as these 6 political associations will vie in Puntland district elections in the coming months," said Chairman Barre.
The 6 political associations are named as Horseed, Hor'ad, Midnimo, Wadajir, Puntland People's Party (UDAD), and Puntland Democratic Party (PDP). Political associations were given three months starting from September 2012 to organize their associations and meet the requirements.
Some political associations requested that TPEC extend the deadline further, however, Chairman Barre stated that the deadline would not be extended because it was extended before and would delay the democratization even further if extended again.
The requirements to be registered as a political association included paying a $7,500 registration fee - reduced from $15,000 - to TPEC.
Puntland President Abdirahman Mohamed Farole welcomed the TPEC announcement and praised their efforts to create an enabling environment for political associations in Puntland.
District elections are scheduled for later this year and the 3 political associations with the most votes in district elections will become the three official political parties in Puntland, in accordance with Puntland constitution.
