MOGADISHU, Somalia Feb 20 (Garowe Online) -
Suspected insurgents targeted African Union peacekeepers deployed in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu on Friday, Radio Garowe reports.
At least one civilian was killed and three others wounded in the crossfire after insurgents attacked AU peacekeepers, known locally as AMISOM, stationed at the ex-Jalle Siyad compounded, witnesses said.
“We woke up to explosions and bullets,” said a resident who lives near the compound.
There was no information available on casualties suffered by the fighting sides.
Separately, a roadside explosion at a security checkpoint in south Mogadishu manned by Islamic Courts gunmen targeted an AMISOM military convoy as it passed through, the AMISOM spokesman said.
Maj. Bahoku Barigye, the AMISOM force spokesman in Mogadishu, told reporters that no soldier was hurt but admitted that one of their army vehicles was slightly damaged.
