Somalia: Al-Shabaab associate sentenced to death in Puntland

A court in Garowe, the administrative capital of Somalia’s Puntland state has sentenced to death a man accused of planning terrorist attacks in Puntland and break-away republic of Somaliland.

Hussein Mohammed Ali, who was dressed in women attire and veil, has confessed before the court that he is among the Somalia’s hard-line insurgent group of Al-Shabaab and was planning to carry out attacks in the two regions.

He also confessed that he was a photographer and used his profession to smuggle explosives in the regions.

Delivering the verdict, the judge said the accused can however appeal against the ruling.

The court has also handed jail term sentences to other accused people over their involvement in the planned terrorist attacks.

Puntland, which declared its semi-autonomous status in 1998 and enjoys peace, has been recently experiencing planned assassinations targeted on security forces, senior government officials and lawmakers, which forced the government to take stern action.
