GURI EL, Somalia Dec 6 (Garowe Online) -
Islamist Al Shabaab fighters seized a town in central Somalia after two battles against a local Sufi group, Radio Garowe reported Saturday.
Locals in Guri El town, in the central region of Galgadud, said families were fleeing the town for fear of more violence.
"Many families went to Dhusamareb," said a local elder, referring to the regional capital of Galgadud.
Fighters loyal to a local Sufi group, Ahlu Sunnah wal Jamee'a, had reportedly withdrawn to the outskirts of Guri El.
Witnesses said Al Shabaab fighters were "in full control" of the town, while hospital
officials confirmed a death toll of seven people from Friday’s fighting.
The situation in Guri El was reportedly calm but residents remained worried about renewed violence.
