Somalia: Al Shabaab shut down Baidoa radio, arrest journalists

BAIDOA, Somalia Apr 27 (Garowe Online) - Islamist hardliners in southern Somalia have shut down an independent radio station and detained three of its staff, Radio Garowe reports.

The three journalists were identified as: Muktar Mohamed Atosh, Mohamed Adawe and Mohamed Nur. Al Shabaab fighters in the southwestern town of Baidoa said the three men were arrested for "spreading false news."

An independent source in Baidoa said Radio Jubba, which was the only working radio station in Baidoa, was shut down by Al Shabaab gunmen after the radio aired the voices of civilians complaining about people recently arrested by Al Shabaab.

It is the second time Al Shabaab fighters in Baidoa have arrested journalists in Baidoa this month. Last week, a journalist working for independent Radio Shabelle was arrested and later released.
