MOGADISHU, Somalia Feb 18 2012 (Garowe Online) – Local authorities apprehended a car packed full of explosives today in Mogadishu, Garowe Online reports.
The car was apprehended at the busy juncture of KM 4, according to police officials, the driver who was apprehended was wearing a vest full of explosives.
Commander Khalif Ahmed told the local media that the driver who he described as an Al Shabaab agent planned on detonating his car and himself at a busy location but was caught before a near catastrophe. The man is being held in custody as he awaits a trial.
Commander Khalif identified the man in custody as Idiris Abdifatah who packed his car with explosives and drove from Elesha Biyaha which is around 15 kms west of Mogadishu and sits in between Mogadishu and Afgoye.
The population of Elesha Biyaha has dwindled as residents escape clashes between TFG alongside AMISOM and Al Shabaab. As AMISOM forces look to capture Afgoye an Al Shabaab stronghold, residents of Afgoye and Elesha Biyaha have entered Mogadishu in large numbers to avoid being stranded when the clashes start. Audace Nduwumunsi deputy commander of AMISOM told AFP that the battle for Afgoye will begin but didn't specify a date.
