BELEDWEYNE, Somalia Feb 11 2012 (Garowe Online) – Clashes between local authorities and armed militia in the south central city of Beledweyne have claimed 5 lives, Radio Garowe reports.
The clashes that sparked Sunday afternoon have continued into the evening with the fighting intensifying as each minute passes. There have been no confirmations on how the fighting began.
Col. Mohamed Nuur information secretary of Dohada Shabelle - the local authorities in Beledweyne backed by the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) - stated that they are fighting an armed group of tribal militia linked that may have links to Al Shabaab.
The fighting has put the busy city of Beledweyne in a standstill, most of the businesses have been closed and residents have reported a large amount of stray bullets hitting their homes as the fighting continues.
According to official sources Ethiopian troops have not engaged in the ongoing battle as of yet.
The city of Beledweyne was an Al Shabaab stronghold until January when Ethiopian troops backed by the local authorities forced Al Shabaab from the city. Although Al Shabaab was forced out of the city their presence is still felt with growing attacks on both Ethiopian and Somali forces in the past weeks.
