Somalia: Elder shot dead in Galkayo

GALKAYO, Somalia Dec 29 2012 (Garowe Online) –   A traditional elder was shot dead in Galkayo - the capital of Mudug region - on Saturday night as he exited a mosque, Garowe Online reports.

Gunmen shot Gabobe Adan Dalab - a well known elder in Galkayo - outside a mosque in Galkayo’s Israa neighborhood on Saturday night.

The traditional elder was rushed to a nearby hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Puntland authorities rushed to the scene however, the gunmen fled the vicinity before police could arrive.

Puntland authorities told media that it is still too early to give a statement on the shooting but they did state that the investigation is ongoing. Government sources said Al Shabaab terrorist group has targeted and killed community leaders in Galkayo in recent years.

Puntland’s Mudug Governor Mohamed Yusuf Jama Tigey stated at a press conference on Saturday that security in Mudug has improved drastically and that anyone attributing to insecurity in the region would not be tolerated.

Citizens of Galkayo were shocked to hear about the brazen killing of Mr. Dalab as murders in the once volatile city have decreased tremendously.
