Somalia: Ethiopian troops enter Gedo region


MOGADISHU, Somalia Jan 30 2012 (Garowe Online) – Ethiopian troops have crossed over the border and have entered Gedo region and are en route to Bay region to combat Al Shabaab, Radio Garowe reports.

Ethiopian troops who have been fighting Al Shabaab in south central Somalia entered through the border town Dolow and have been spotted in Luq located in Gedo region.

The Ethiopian troops have been reported headed to Bay region an Al Shabaab stronghold in south central Somalia.

Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said on Friday that there is no rush to withdraw from Somalia, Mr. Meles said, until African Union troops arrive to “fill in the gaps.”

The local authorities alongside Ethiopian troops conducted military operations that forced Al Shabaab insurgents out of Beledweyne last month.

The Transitional Federal Government (TFG) with the support of its allied forces has been in an ever intensifying battle to rid Somalia of Al Shabaab.

The TFG have been progressing in the battle with Al Shabaab, the terror organization have been retreating from strongholds in south, and south-central Somalia due gains from allied forces fighting in Somalia.
