Somalia: Federal parliament passes 2013 budget

MOGADISHU, Somalia Dec. 31, 2012 (Garowe Online) - Somalia's federal parliament has passed a 2013 budget bill that was previously rejected by Somali MPs on Dec. 26 in Mogadishu, Garowe Online reports.

Finance Minister Mohamud Hassan Suleiman told MPs that the Somali government has revised the 2013 budget by decreasing expenditure for the presidency, the prime minister’s office, and the ministries.

The minister also noted that the 2013 budget of $109million increased by $31million expenditure for social services and $11million expenditure for Somali security forces.

After lawmakers’ remarks, Mahad Abdalla Awad, the second deputy speaker, said that the parliament quorum is 177 MPs present and announced the vote as 176 MPs voted yes, 1 MP abstained, and no MPs voted against the 2013 budget.

"The 2013 budget has passed," announced Awad, the second deputy speaker.
