Somalia: Former Prime Minister supporters’ shot at rally

MOGADISHU, Somalia Aug 9 2012 (Garowe Online) – Former Prime Minister Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed Farmajo’s supporters were fired upon allegedly by Transitional Federal Government troops in Mogadishu on Thursday, Garowe Online reports.

Farmajo who is a candidate for the Somali presidential elections arrived in Mogadishu Thursday afternoon and was welcomed by his supporters.

According to local sources in Mogadishu, Farmajo’s supporters including some TFG soldiers who came to welcome the former Prime Minister were randomly fired upon by men dressed in TFG forces’ uniform.

At least two people were killed and three others injured including one TFG soldier and one civilian.

According to one witness at the scene the men escaped from the scene only after the supporters had fled the area.

TFG Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali Gaas announced on Thursday morning that security in the capital would be increased as elections for parliament and president draw closer.

Officials in the TFG have yet to comment on the shootings that led to two deaths on Thursday.
