Somalia: Hizbul Islam rebels ‘vacate’ Mogadishu posts

MOGADISHU, Somalia Oct 14 (Garowe Online) - Somali insurgent faction Hizbul Islam has vacated posts in the capital Mogadishu that it has controlled in the war against the UN-recognized Somali interim government, Radio Garowe reports.

Hizbul Islam rebels have vacated posts in Mogadishu’s Wardhigley, Kaaraan, Shibis and Yaaqshiid districts in recent days, local sources reported.

There was no explanation for the sudden military movement, but inside sources said Hizbul Islam rebels are planning to reinforce themselves in Hiran region of central Somalia.

Meanwhile, the other insurgent group, Al Shabaab, has reportedly seized control of all the posts vacated by Hizbul Islam.

The two rebel factions have been jointly waging a relentless campaign to overthrow the Somali government since May. But relations between the insurgent factions worsened earlier this month when war erupted between them over the control of the southern port of Kismayo.
