BAIDOA, Somalia Nov 11 (Garowe Online) -
A Somali lawmaker told reporters Tuesday that he survived an assassination attempt when suspected insurgents attacked his home overnight, Radio Garowe reported.
MP Yusuf Mohamed Kheyre was at home in Baidoa when the attack took place, but was unharmed during the heavy exchange of gunfire.
"The attackers used grenades and assault rifles," MP Kheyre said, while indicating that none of the armed guards at his house were wounded.
Neighbors said two civilians were wounded in the crossfire.
No group claimed responsibility for the attack and the lawmaker declined to blame any particular faction.
But attacks targeting government officials have been carried out by Islamist rebels waging an anti-Ethiopia insurgency for the past two years.
Baidoa, 250km northwest of Mogadishu, is home to Somalia's 275-member federal parliament.
MP Khayre represents clan communities who traditionally inhabit the Bay and Bakool regions, where Baidoa is located.
