Somalia:Islamist official defends decision to join Al-Shabaab

A top Somali islamist official who recently joined Al-Shabaab says he took the decision to unite all the Islamists fighting in war-torn Somalia.

Sheikh Hassan Abdullahi Al-Turki, an immediate former Hizbul Islam’s second in command, who also head his own Raskamboni Brigade confirmed the ditch to Al-Shabaab in a press conference held in southern city of Baidoa.

“My aim is to play a key role in the unification of all Mujahidins and Muslims so that they can repel those who want to destroy them. So, I urge all of them to unite and become one entity,” said Sheikh Turki.

He also sent a special message to the remaining Hizbul Islam officials, urging them to join the Al-Shabaab umbrella.

Sheikh Turki was reacting to sentiments from Hizbul Islam leader Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys who disapproved his decision to join Al-Shabaab, whom he accused of violating agreement with his group.

Al-Shabaab and Hizbul Islam was engaged in deadly battle over the control of southern border towns in recent months and the latest development is expected to further add insult to the injuries.
