Somalia: Journalist gunned down by armed gang

GALKAYO, Somalia Mar 5 2012 (Garowe Online) – A longtime journalist and well respected professional Ali Ahmed Abdi was gunned down in Galkayo the capital of Mudug region on Sunday, Radio Garowe reports.

Mr. Abdi was a reporter for one of the oldest radio stations in Puntland Radio Galkayo. He worked 6 years at the station and was planning to leave for university in the coming months. He was gunned down by an armed group authorities are conducting an investigation to the death of Mr. Abdi.  

On Monday hundreds showed up to attend the funeral of Mr. Abdi who was laid to rest in Galkayo. The former Vice President and former Finance Minister Mohamed Ali Yusuf Gagaab attended the funeral along with former Minister of Health Dr. Bashir Ali Bihi including tribal leaders, women groups and fellow journalists all paid their respects to the deceased.

The killing of Mr. Abdi comes after the decrease in of attacks and killings in Galkayo in recent weeks.
