Somalia: Journalist wounded in Mogadishu

MOGADISHU, Somalia Mar 26 2012 (Garowe Online) – A Shabelle media journalist was wounded by gunmen in the capital Mogadishu late Sunday night, Radio Garowe reports.

Muhayadin Hasan Mohamed was approached by two men late Sunday night in the district of Wadajir the men circled Muhayadin and pulled out pistols and began firing. Muhayadin was shot in the chest but his injuries are not severe.

“Two gunmen approached me near Mogadishu Theater, one of the assailants came from behind and the other stood in front of me, both pulled out pistols and began firing,” said Muhayadin who spoke to reporters from the hospital.

Last month the director of Somaliweyn media was shot and killed in the same area Muhayadin was wounded at. The men who shot Muhayadin escaped and authorities are investigating the shooting.

Shabelle media employees have been targets before with two directors being killed in the past year. In January gunmen shot and killed the former director of Shabelle media Hasan Osman Abdi.

Journalism in Somalia is one of the riskiest professions in the world according to Amnesty international.
