Somalia:Kenyan convoy attacked in southern Somalia

GARBAHAREY, Somalia Feb 8 2012 (Garowe Online) – A Kenyan convoy was attacked by Al Shabaab insurgents near Garbaharey a town in southern Somalia, Radio Garowe reports.

According to an Al Shabaab spokesman the Kenyan convoy was ambushed as they were making their way to a nearby town in Gedo region.  The spokesman added that after ambushing the convoy they managed to burn two technical vehicles that belonged to the Kenyan troops.

The insurgents planted roadside bombs and opened fire on the troops resulting in a gun battle that according to the Al Shabaab spokesman 6 Kenyans were killed.

“The attack was planned we planted bombs and waited for the convoy to pass through to the next town,” stated the spokesman.

The Kenyan military spokesman Major Emmanuel Chirchir has not commented on the alleged attack, but sources on the ground say that Kenyan troops clashed with Al Shabaab near Garbaharey early Wednesday.

Ethiopian and Kenyan troops entered Gedo region last month; ambushes on Kenyan, Ethiopian and TFG troops have been constant. On Sunday Al Shabaab insurgents attacked a military compound in Luuq a town in Gedo, according to an Al Shabaab spokesman  the ambush resulted in 14 casualties from coalition forces.

The Kenyan military and Transitional Federal Government(TFG) troops recently captured Dalayad a small town near Al Shabaab stronghold Kismayo a very populated port city in southern Somalia.
