Somalia MP survives roadside bomb in Mogadishu

MOGADISHU, Somalia Jan. 12, 2013 (Garowe Online) - A member of Somalia’s federal parliament has survived a roadside explosion on Saturday in Mogadishu, Garowe Online reports.

MP Mohamed-Nuh Abdullahi, who was sworn in as an MP in August 2012, told the BBC Somali Service that he was driving when his vehicle was struck by a roadside explosion.

“I was slightly hurt, but one of two of my bodyguards is in critical condition,” said MP Mohamed-Nuh. “This attack, and the attack before it, will not stop me from serving my national duties and I will continue my work as a Somali Member of Parliament,” the MP added defiantly.

Local reports said the MP survived a similar roads ide explosion in 2012.

Somali police spokesman Col. Hassan Barise told reporters in Mogadishu that a second explosion occurred in Mogadishu’s Hodan district but indicated that authorities were still investigating the second explosion.

Mogadishu has experienced uneasy tension with frequent street fights, assassinations and bombings in the midst of new constructio n, ever since Somali government forces aided by AMISOM troops seized the seaside city from Al Shabaab militants in mid-2011.
