MOGADISHU, Somalia Dec 10, 2011 (Garowe Online) - On Friday, some members of the Transitional Federal Parliament (TFP) of Somalia asked UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to remove Dr. Augustine Mahiga as UN Special Envoy for Somalia, Radio Garowe reports.
Ban Ki Moon who visited Mogadishu on Friday commented that Somalia at in a crucial juncture. While visiting the war torn country, he met with Somali MPs who had suggested the removal of Dr. Mahiga.
MP Abdirashid Adan Gabyow told the media, "I am asking Mr. Ban Ki Moon to please remove Dr. Mahiga and replace him with someone who can help change the situation Somalia is in."
Mahiga, who was appointed in June 2010, was appointed as Head of the UN Political Office for Somalia (UNPOS) and was appointed by Ban Ki-moon.
In June 2011, Mahiga helped to facilitate the signing of an agreement in Kampala between President Sharif Sheik Ahmed and Speaker of Parliament Sharif Hassan Sheik Aden, ending months of political dispute. The agreement led to the postponing of presidential elections until August 2012 and the Roadmap process was adopted to lead towards elections.
Somali authorities, including the TFG in Mogadishu, Puntland and Ahlu Sunna group, have all endorsed the Roadmap process led by Dr. Mahiga.
Local sources report that this group of Somali MPs held a private meeting among themselves where discussions included possible removal of Speaker Sharif Hassan.
Mr. Ban Ki-moon's visit to Mogadishu was part of shoring up support for the security efforts of the TFG and allied AMISOM peacekeepers in Mogadishu and bring attention to the humanitarian conditions in Somalia.
