Somalia: Midnimo political association holds conference in Puntland capital

GAROWE, Somalia Feb 3 2013 (Garowe Online) – Over 200 people attended the 2-day opening ceremony for Midnimo political association in Garowe, Garowe Online reports.

The event which commenced on Saturday was held at Puntland State University (PSU) and was attended by Puntland members of parliament, former government officials, Midnimo regional representatives, youth and other members of the civil society.

The guest speakers at the event included, Midnimo representatives from the different regions in Puntland, MPs and Midnimo founders and leaders.

To begin the ceremony temporary Deputy Chairman, Gen. Ali Ismail, spoke about the goals of the political association and the need for Puntland citizens to take in the democratic process.

Gen. Ismail also spoke at great lengths about the need for Puntland students studying both abroad and at home and intellectuals to take part help build their country.

After the various guest speakers the temporary Chairman of Midnimo political association Dr. Sadiq Enow gave a lengthy speech at the event covering the history of Somalia, Jubaland state formation and the political process in Puntland state.
Dr. Enow discussed the need to provide a platform for the voices of those who haven’t been heard.

“Our main goal is that Puntland citizens have a political organization that represents their needs and provides the services they require,” said Dr. Enow.
The transitional chairman also spoke about how Puntland intellectuals should play a greater role in developing their country.

Midnimo is expected to complete its internal bylaws and select a permanent chairman on Sunday.

The six political associations met in Garowe following a meeting arranged by Transitional Puntland Electoral Commission (TPEC) and agreed to a Joint Code of Conduct on Friday.

Puntland Democratic Party (PDP) another political association is also holding an opening ceremony in the administrative capital of Puntland, Garowe, as will the other political associations.

The six Puntland political associations which were registered last month by TPEC after meeting the commission’s requirements, are gearing up for district elections in the coming months.
