Somalia: Outbreak in Hosingow kills 12

HOSINGOW, Somalia Sep 13 2012 (Garowe Online) – In the district of Hosingow at least 12 people have died due to an unknown outbreak which causes excessive vomiting and diarrhea, Garowe Online reports.

Health officials in Hosingow still do not know what caused the outbreak in Hosingow located in the lower Jubba region approximately 150 kms south of Kismayo.

The sickness causes extreme vomiting and diarrhea and there are some reports that patients have died within hours of contracting the illness.

According to WHO health officials, there were over 100 people treated for this outbreak and 13 people still being treated.

Although the illness hasn’t been diagnosed health officials say reports of new cases have decreased.

The outbreak has resulted in 12 deaths already and there is fear that this outbreak could spread.

According to health officials, the pastoralist community is the most at risk and because of their livelihood could go untreated or treated too late.

There is an intense battle for the Al Shabaab controlled port city of Kismayo north of Hosingow which could hamper health efforts in the region.
