Somalia:President Sharif calls London conference opportunity to change Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia Feb 20 2012 (Garowe Online) – President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed of the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) of Somalia called the upcoming Somali conference in London an opportunity to help amend problems in Somalia, Radio Garowe reports.

President Sharif left Mogadishu on Monday making a brief stop in Djibouti before heading to London for the conference. While in Djibouti, President Sharif met with Djibouti President Ismail Omar Geele and discussed further cooperation between the two governments and the upcoming conference.

President Sharif who held a press conference after his private meeting with President Ismail told the media that he expects the outcomes of this conference to help solve the problems of Somali people. “The London conference is a conference for the Somali people and I don’t expect that the outcomes of this conference will be results that the Somali people do not support,” said President Sharif.

TFG President added that he hoped this conference could help restore a functioning government and help move the current government out of transition.

The recently signed Garowe II principles which were signed by respective heads of Somalia has been given much support by the international community as the Somali government moves out of transition. UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon’s spokesperson released a statement on Sunday, “The Secretary-General congratulates the broad spectrum of Somali stakeholders who reached a crucial political agreement on 17 February 2012 at the Garowe II Constitutional Conference held in Garowe.”

As the press release states, the agreement will set up clear steps to ending the transitional government in Somalia. Also the spokesman for France’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Vincent Fluorine welcomed the recent agreement that Somali leaders reached in Garowe as well as the upcoming London conference.
