Somalia: Project to build roads to coastal towns, beginning in Puntland

GAROWE, Somalia Jun 27 2012 (Garowe Online) – A project to build roads linking coastal towns to the main road which runs through Puntland is set to begin, Radio Garowe reports.

Puntland Highway Authority (PUNHA) director, Hassan Osman Ali held a press conference in Garowe on Wednesday to announce the new project set to begin in the coming weeks.

“The project when completed will finally make coastal towns in Puntland accessible to travelers,” said engineer Hassan.

The project will build roads to towns on the coast of Puntland like Bargaal, Hafun, Eyl and Jariban which have been inaccessible due to virtually non-existent roads.

Traveling to Puntland’s coast is long painstaking trip involving many detours due to extremely rough road conditions.

According to Mr. Hassan, the project intends to help make vital coastal communities more accessible which can boost employment and create industry along the coast of Puntland.

As well as creating new roads to the coast the director of PUNHA said that there would be reconstruction to patches of dilapidated roads.
