Somalia: Puntland delegation returns from EU maritime security seminar

GAROWE, Somalia Feb 10 2013 (Garowe Online) – A Puntland delegation led by State Minister for Security Abdullahi Jama returned from taking part in a Maritime Security seminar in Djibouti hosted by EUCAP Nestor, Garowe Online reports.

The Somali Federal Government delegation was led by Admiral Saeed Adan Yusuf who was accompanied by three representatives and the Puntland state delegation was led by Minister Jama and 5 representatives.

The Somali delegation met EUCAP Nestor senior representatives including Admiral Jacques Launay Head of Mission and Admiral Leon Bruin Deputy Head of Mission.

The three day seminar held in Djibouti discussed Somalia’s maritime security and was a first meeting for Somali representatives from both central and state government to state their needs regarding economic development, protection sovereign boundaries of Somali waters and judicial capacities.

The three day seminar is the first initial follow up meeting between EUCAP Nestor officials and Puntland state officials since the last visit by the EU officials late last year.

Minister Jama who spoke to press briefly stated that the maritime security seminar was an important step towards the enhancement of maritime security in Puntland.

The EU has pledged a more focused initiative for Somalia for 2013, with a fall conference that will help work out a “new deal” for Somalia.
