Somalia: Puntland gov’t officials take a late night stroll of Galkayo

GALKAYO, Somalia Aug 30 2012 (Garowe Online) – Governor of Mudug region along with Galkayo Mayor and Puntland’s Deputy Police Chief for a second night walked the Galkayo streets Wednesday, Garowe Online reports.

Dubbed the ‘peace walks’ by Mudug Governor Mohamed Yusuf Jama Tigey, Puntland Government and Police officials accompanied by media took a stroll for the second night around east Galkayo in the Garsoor neighborhood on Wednesday.

Governor Tigey, Mayor of Galkayo Saeed Abdi Farah and Deputy Police Chief Gen. Muhayadin Ahmed Nuur chatted with pedestrians and visited coffee shops in their publicized walk.

They also gave a press conference Wednesday night urging continued cooperation between civilians and police to fight crime in the capital of Mudug region, Galkayo.

Governor Tigey assertively stated that Galkayo’s peace has been restored and that it is safe to walk the streets of some of Galkayo’s formerly crime ridden neighborhoods.  

“We are in the streets of Garsoor once known as dangerous place at night and we are several. In our midst government officials, journalists, citizens, shop owners and police are walking the streets to let people know that Galkayo is safe and we want to keep it that way,” said Governor Tigey.

Gen. Muhayadin also gave a statement to press commending the citizens of Galkayo in their cooperation with police.

“I want to thank the people of Galkayo who worked closely with the Puntland police forces in apprehending criminals and their cooperation,” said Gen Muhayadin.

Galkayo residents were elated that government officials were walking the streets and meeting with residents.

“It gives me confidence that our government officials are walking the streets just like everybody else and meeting with people,” said Saeed Yusuf Haji a spokesman for a Galkayo based youth group.

Tuesday night they met with community elders and business owners in other neighborhoods in Galkayo.

In a bid to fight crime in the city Puntland has reinforced police in Galkayo which has lowered crime over the past weeks.
