Somalia: "Puntland is not fighting with clans in Galgala"

A minister from Somalia’s semi-autonomous state of Puntland has defended his government over claims that its engaged in clan warfare over the control of Galgala mountains.

Puntland's Minister for Internal Affairs, Local Government and Rural Development Gen. Abdullahi Ahmed Jaamac Ilka Jiir said Puntland people are brothers and have one aspire, adding that there is no clan conflict going on in the region.

"We are very disappointed about the propaganda that the terrorist group is using to mislead our people, they said the clashes are between Puntland and clan militias, which is totally incorrect. We are fighting terrorists and the people must understand that the government is there to defend them from any attack and I appeal for unite to defeat our enemy," said Gen. Ilka jiir.

The minister was speaking after attending a function of swearing in the District Commissioner (DC) of Garowe, Puntland’s administrative capital.

Gen. Ilkajir adds that the civilians must face the terrorist and not to pay attention on the propaganda issue that was made by the terrorist.

"It’s incredible that women are arresting the criminals who are breaching the security rather than the men who fear, it seems that there is state of fear, which has been created by the terrorist, what we need from you is not to fear from them (terrorist) instead help the security forces in defeating these terrorists," said the minister.

The minister said the government doesn’t have any hidden interest in Galgala Mountains, but only to defend its people from the terrorist and foreign enemy.

Puntland's government have long suspected that a series of bombings in Bossaso, the region’s commercial capital were organized by Galgala militants, who are accused of having links to terrorist group Al Shabaab in southern Somalia.

Heavy clashes between government forces and the militants have led to the deaths of scores of people in recent weeks in the mountainous region.
