DHOBLEY, Somalia Jul 3 2012 (Garowe Online) – Four aid workers kidnapped in Dhadaab where rescued in a bold operation by Somali and Kenyan forces on Monday, Garowe Online reports.
The four aid workers were being held in the town of Ali-buley in the Lower Jubba region, allied forces after rescuing the aid workers took them to Dhobley 40 kms from where they were being held captive.
Somali government forces alongside pro-government Ras-Kamboni militia and Kenyan forces carried out the operation in Ali-buley after receiving intelligence from a vehicle detained near Dhobley that was bound to Ali-buley.
According to Transitional Federal Government of Somalia (TFG) officials, it is believed the vehicle was carrying food and supplies to the captives. After questioning the driver, authorities received information confirming that the hostages were being held in Ali-buley.
While conducting the operation a gun battle between the kidnappers and the allied forces erupted, one hostage-taker was killed and the other two kidnappers surrendered.
Kenyan military spokesman, Cyrus Oguna said that the operation ended successfully and that the workers are in good condition.
“The four aid workers who were kidnapped in Dhadaab 3 days ago were rescued by allied forces, they are in good health,” said Mr. Oguna adding that there were no casualties on their part.
After Monday's quick response by both the Somali and Kenyan government the four Norwegian Refugee Council workers returned safely to Nairobi where it is expected that the workers will give a statement.
The aid workers were kidnapped in Dhadaab Friday on a visit to the world’s largest refugee camp. Reportedly the aid workers were traveling without security in the camp after a security assessment predicted the camp was secure for the delegation to travel.
