GAROWE, Somalia Oct 3 2012 (Garowe Online) – Director of
Puntland’s Counter-Piracy directorate Abdirasak Mohamed Dirir traveled to
Maldives to complete discussions of freeing 40 Somali youth imprisoned in the
islands, Garowe Online reports.
Director Dirir met with Maldives officials on Wednesday to
complete discussions on the freeing of 40 youth from Puntland, imprisoned in the
islands since 2009 for illegally entering the country.
Mr. Dirir accompanied by officials from UNODC met with the
Maldives Minister of Defense and Security, Mohamed Nazim, Maldives State
Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hassan Saeed and Chief of Police Abdullah Riyaz.
After the meetings Mr. Dirir stated that the meeting was
successful in completing the agreement between Puntland and Maldives to free
the 40 youth from Puntland.
“Our mission was to wrap up the agreement by Puntland and
Maldives to free the 40 youth who are currently being held in Maldives. Thanks to
God the youth will be heading home as quick as possible,” said Director Dirir.
After the meeting Mr. Dirir met with the jailed youth to
inform them that they would be heading home.
Speaking to media Mr. Dirir said that they were ecstatic that they
would finally be able to go home to their families.
Mr. Dirir also stated that they were given permission to
speak with their families and update them on their status.
