MOGADISHU, Somalia Feb 5 2012 (Garowe Online) – The Transitional Federal Government (TFG) of Somalia has confiscated government property that was lost after the collapse of the Siad Barre regime, Radio Garowe reports.
Authorities in Mogadishu had forced the people who were using dilapidated government buildings from the previous regime as shelter after passing a law that banned living in government buildings.
President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed who spoke on the evictions said, “I would like our brothers and sisters who are living in government buildings to please move out due to renovations that the Turkey government has promised.”
TFG implemented this law after it was passed late last month; TFG authorities had ordered a previous warning for people who were using the compounds as shelter to leave by February 5 or be forced out.
According to people who were forced out of the compounds, the TFG hadn’t prepared a location for those who used the compounds as shelter. One mother who was forced out of her makeshift home said, “The government have not relocated us and we have no shelter, I thought the government was here to help not hurt.”
Many of the residents of the government buildings are considered internally displaces people or IDPs because they had fled their homes try to escape constant violence in southern Somalia one mother who fled her home in Jowhar asked that President Sharif do more for residents who were evicted.
