Somalia: Taiwanese trawler released

MOGADISHU, Somalia Jul 18 2012 (Garowe Online) – A Taiwanese trawler being held off the coast of Somalia was freed after a reported ransom agreement, Garowe Online reports.

The Shiuh Fu No 1 a trawler which was captured by Somali pirates near Madagascar in December 2010.

According to the Taiwan’s foreign ministry, the 26 crew members 1 of who was Taiwanese were taken to Tanzania by the Chinese navy after they abandoned their trawler due to mechanical problems.

The other crew members were of Chinese and Vietnamese nationalities.

Both the Taiwanese and Chinese governments confirmed the release of the hostages.

China has been involved in the anti piracy campaign by the international community actively deploying three naval ships in January 2012 to patrol the Gulf of Aden.
