Somalia: Two new Puntland political associations declared in Garowe

GAROWE, Somalia Dec. 21, 2012 (Garowe Online) - Two new political associations have been declared in the Puntland capital Garowe this week, joining five political associations that were declared since last month, Garowe Online reports.

On Thursday Dec. 20, Talowadaag political association was declared at a public event held at New Rays Hotel in Garowe.

Dr. Ali Ismail Mohamed, the acting chairman of Talowadaag ( cons ensus-building), told local media that Talowadaag association is determined to partake in upcoming local elections scheduled for mid-2013.

“We are determined to win the people’s confidence,” said Dr. Ali Ismail, while describing the new political association’s plans in security, economic and social affairs.

Similarly, another political association has been declared and named GAHAYR, a Somali acronym that stands for Golaha Aqoonta iyo Horumarinta ee Asaaska Yoolka Runta (Council of Education and Development towards Founding the True Goal).

Mr. Abdirizak Ismail Hassan Darwish, the acting chairman of GAHAYR political association, told Radio Garowe that the GAHAYR public event will be held in Garowe, marking the political association’s official launch.

“The political association’s emblem consists of a pen, a candle and a book,” said Mr. Darwish, adding: “There are some people who are unappreciative of the opportunity to establish political associations, but they will realize later when it is too late.”

On September 11, 2012, the Puntland Electoral Commission declared that political associations can be legally declared in Puntland for the first time since the state’s formation in 1998, in accordance with the Political Association Law of 2012.

In November, Puntland President Abdirahman Mohamed Farole declared the state’s first political association HORSEED followed by Puntland Democratic Party declared in Nairobi that same month.

In December, three political associations were declared in Bossaso, namely: UGUB political association led by former Sanaag governor Mohamud Said Dabayl, HOR-CAD political association (Horumar iyo Cadaalad – Development and Justice) led by Puntland businessman Omar Ismail Waberi, and Midnimo political association led by Dr. Sadiq Enow.
