A high level UN delegation led by the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, B. Lynn Pascoe visited Somalia’s restive capital, Mogadishu in a bid to encourage the country’s leadership to focus on governing the war-torn country.
Pascoe, accompanied by Ambassador Augustine Mahiga, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's Special Representative for Somalia, held talks with President Sheikh Ahmed Sheikh Shariff at Villa Somalia during which they discussed the security and humanitarian situation in the country.
He said the international community is very interested in supporting the Transitional Federal Government (TFG), “but the Government itself needs to do more and learn to work as a cohesive team.”
“It is crucial to show the long suffering people of Somalia that the Government can deliver basic services,” he added.
Mr. Pascoe has assured the Somali president that UN security-sector assistance will soon reach the Somali government.
Mr. Pascoe also praised the work of African Union forces deployed in the country since early 2007, calling for more troops as well as financial and logistical support for the force, known as AMISOM.
Meanwhile, heavy fighting and shelling resumed in Mogadishu on Thursday, claiming the lives of at least 2 civilians. Witnesses said five more were wounded.
The clashes are in line with incessant fighting that rocked Somalia’s capital for the last ten days.
Separately, reports indicate that there has been an increase in Ugandan troops serving African Union peacekeeping mission.
According to Ugandan army commander Lieutenant General Edward Katumba Wamala, 750 more peacekeepers have joined the Ugandan contingent.
African Union has some 6,300 from Uganda and Burundi, who are providing protection to the fragile UN-backed Somali government in Mogadishu.
