Somalia: Violence kills 11 people in Mogadishu

Fierce clashes between Somali government troops, backed by African Union (AU) forces, and al-Shabab fighters have left at least 11 people dead and 25 others injured in Mogadishu.

Seven people -- mostly Soldiers -- lost their lives on late Wednesday fighting in Mogadishu's northern district of Boondheere.

“In the morning, i witnesses 5 dead bodies --who were wearing combat dress—in the street, so far, no casualties around the area,” said a Witness.

In a separate incident, three people – mostly civilians-- were killed and 7 others wounded in Mogadishu's Warhdiigley district when clashes broke out between AU forces and al-Shabab militants.

In addition, two civilians were killed and dozen others sustained injuries when they got caught in an exchange of shells between members of the al-Shabab group and AU troops in Mogadishu's busy Bakara Market and western part of the war-torn city on Thursday.

Al-Shabaab fired mortar to Bakara market killed two women and injured 12 others, according to the reports.

Meanwhile, a landmine injured 5 people in Somalia Capital of Mogadishu.

Officials said two landmine was set in the street, claimed investigation was carrying on.

 Over the past two decades, up to one million people have lost their lives in fighting between rival factions and due to famine and disease.

There are more than 1.4 million internally displaced people (IDPs) in Somalia. Over 300,000 of the IDPs are sheltered in Mogadishu.

Somalia has not had a functioning government since 1991, when warlords overthrew former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.
