Somalia: Widespread condemnation of Sheikh Abdiqadir assassination

GAROWE, Somalia Feb 21 2013 (Garowe Online) – The International Union of Muslim Scholars, the EU and UN have condemned the recent terror attacks in Puntland and southern Somalia, Garowe Online reports.
 
Ambassador to Somalia Michele Cervone d’Urso who visited the administrative capital of Puntland, Garowe on Tuesday to meet with Puntland President Abdirahman Mohamed Farole. Issued a statement before arriving in Garowe condemning the recent killing of Sheikh Abdiqadir Nur Farah.
 
"These latest deplorable terrorist acts will only serve to strengthen the resolve of the Somali people and authorities", reiterated Ambassador Cervone d'Urso.
 
Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Somalia Augustine Mahiga also condemned the assassination of Sheikh Abdiqadir and the bombing of a beachfront restaurant in Mogadishu.

“We will not let these cowardly acts unravel the remarkable progress of the past ten months,” said Ambassador Mahiga.

Mr. Mahiga also sent his condolences to the family and friends of the departed and the injured.

Three people were injured trying to subdue Sheikh Ahmed's killer after he shot the Sheikh while he was praying in a mosque.

The International Union of Muslim Scholars mourned for Sheikh Farah and issued a statement for the Somali people to unite against the terrorists.

"The Union calls on the Somali people to unite against extremists to preserve members of Somali society and preserve the lives of scholars and competent nationals," the organization said in a statement.

There has been widespread condemnation of the killing of Sheikh Abdiqadir a prominent Somali scholar and peace activist in Somalia who was laid to rest last week.

The killer is in custody and Puntland authorities have yet to comment on the ongoing investigation.
