Somalia accuse Eritrea for arming rebels

Somalia’s embattled government has accused Eritrea of continuing to provide arms assistance to the powerful rebels fighting in the country

Information Minister Sheik Dahir Mahmud Guelleh his government has evidence showing the Eritrean government is still giving arms and ammunition to Islamist rebel groups fighting Somali government and AU peacekeepers in Mogadishu.

“Eritrea provides Al Shabaab with weapons including arms, ammunition, money and other military equipment to help destabilization the horn of Africa region," the information minister said in a press conference in Mogadishu.

He adds, “Eritrea's military assistance to Somali Islamist rebels is imported in the port city of Kismayo which has also an international airport.”

Gelle asked the International community to help the fragile Somali government defeat the powerful insurgents in a bid to restore the peace and order in the war-torn country.

In a Last month resolution, the 15-member Security Council of the United Nations unanimously imposed sanctions including an arms embargo and travel ban on Eritrea.

However, Asmara has consequently downplayed the sancations and also refutted claims that it’s playing central role in fueling the Somali conflict.
