NAIROBI, Kenya Aug 7 (Garowe Online) -
The president of Somalia’s Transitional Federal Government (TFG) has hailed his meeting with U.S. Secretary of State
Ms. Hillary Clinton in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, Radio Garowe reports.
President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed said the meeting with Secretary Clinton was “successful” while underscoring that the
U.S. government made commitments to assist in funding and training TFG security forces.
Secretary Clinton told a Thursday press conference in Nairobi that U.S. President Barack Obama wants to “expand and extend support” for the TFG. Further, she warned Eritrea to stop interfering in Somali affairs or face consequences.
Eritrea has long been accused of providing funds and arms shipments to Somali insurgents, including Al Shabaab hardliners, a group the U.S. accuses of having links to the Al Qaeda terrorist network.
In June, the U.S. provided 40 tons of weapons to President Sheikh Sharif’s interim government in Mogadishu, where an insurgency led by Al Shabaab threatens to overthrow the five-year old transitional government.
