Somalia’s Security forces apprehend 16 alleged Al Shabaab fighters

MOGADISHU, Somalia Nov 22 2012 (Garowe Online) – Authorities in Mogadishu arrested close to 20 alleged Al Shabaab agents and confiscated various weapons after a raid on a house in the capital’s Yaqshid district, Garowe Online reports.

Friday’s early morning raid on one of Al Shabaab’s alleged nerve centers in Mogadishu’s Yaqshid district by National Security forces, netted a supply of weapons that included rocket launchers, AK 47s, pistols and grenades.

Director of the National Security forces Col. Ahmed Khalif Ereg, stated that the raid netted 16 alleged Al Shabaab agents that were planning attacks on government institutions in Mogadishu.

“We received credible information that there were Al Shabaab agents in that house and we were successful in confiscating weapons and arresting the agents following a brief exchange of fire between our forces and them,” said Col. Ereg.

According to Col. Ereg, the brief exchange killed Abdinur Gar-Dhub an Al Shabaab lieutenant. The other Al Shabaab agent’s -most of them adolescents- surrendered to the forces.

According to sources, the landlord of the house had been turned by National Security forces and had supplied the information that arrested the alleged Al Shabaab fighters.

Some Somali media have reported that the families of the alleged Al Shabaab agents visited the office of the National Security forces to inform the authorities that there sons are not affiliated with the terrorist organization.

Al Shabaab have vowed to fight the new Federal Government but the terrorist organization have been deeply weakened by an onslaught by Somali and African Union forces.
