MOGADISHU, Somalia Oct 5 (Garowe Online) - Soldiers
loyal to Somalia's transitional government raided a health clinic in the outskirts of the capital Mogadishu Friday as part of routine security operations, witnesses said.
An international aid agency, Muslim Aid, was distributing food to needy families when the troops clad in government-issue military uniform attacked Hawa Abdi Clinic, Dr. Hawa Abdi said.
Dr. Hawa said the troops attacked her facility without warning and killed one woman “who was waiting for food.”
The female victim was shot in the head and died on the scene from her fatal wound.
Police officials in Mogadishu would not comment or confirm the incident.
Dr. Hawa Abdi, a beloved Somali humanitarian, opened her private clinic near Mogadishu in the 1980s. Thousands of displaced peoples live on her property and a recent upsurge in Mogadishu attacks led to the arrival of 6,000 fresh refugees in past months.
Meanwhile, targeted killings claimed more lives in Mogadishu today when a deputy prosecutor-general and two others were killed.
Abdulkadir Mohamed Yusuf, his driver and a passenger were shot and killed inside their car in Mogadishu's Yaaqshiid area, witnesses said.
Yusuf was a senior prosecutor in Banadir region, an area that includes the volatile seaside city of Mogadishu.
In yet another targeted killing, a general in Somalia's former army was gunned down near his home this afternoon, medical contacts confirmed.
Three gunmen used pistols to kill Gen. Ahmed Jili'ow, who was a senior intelligence official in the Siad Barre regime that collapsed in 1991.
Witnesses said the attackers and Gen. Jili'ow were driving in separate cars along the same road when the attackers opened a hail of bullets. The late General's bodyguard was also killed in the attack and a third passenger is in critical condition at Mogadishu's Keysaney Hospital.
Those who knew Gen. Jili'ow said he has stayed away from Somali politics since the eruption of civil war in 1991. Unconfirmed reports said the interim government had appointed Gen. Jili'ow to a humanitarian post.
In Mogadishu's infamous Bakara market, grenade explosions and subsequent gunfire from government troops killed at least one person.
There were more than six explosions inside the market today, with suspected insurgents hurling grenades and evading capture by running into the chaotic crowd.
Insurgent attacks have destablized the government's ability to control Mogadishu, despite the presence of thousands of Somali and Ethiopian troops.
These attacks and killings come as senior security officials promised an unprecedented security crackdown in the Somali capital.
